Advice Needed...

Hi all,

I homeschool my now entering 5th grade son. I pulled him out of public school after 1st grade for various reasons--one is that he has all the ADHD symptoms and so doesn't fit public school mode. It was destroying him.

Our issue now is that he is behind in writing (can't coordinate his fast-moving thoughts with his hand and how to spell) and spelling. Math is a bit of a struggle too, although he gets the concepts without a problem, he is slowed by poor memorization skills or forgetting to carry or writing it in the wrong spot, etc. He is above grade level in every other area. He's really quite smart.

My sister has told me that often using colors helps w/memorizing as in breaking a word into sylables using different colors for each part. Something about right brain/left brain and being able to really *see* the word vs. a black blob of letters on a white page. BUT, I'm a single parent, work almost full time, and have two other kids. Where's the time to rewrite all his spelling work?

Anybody know of a good curiculum to use for this type of learner?

I am in the same boat. I have a special needs fourth grader. We just started Sequential Spelling from AVKO, Dyselxia Research Foundation. It uses the color technique, but it's really easy and cheap. Also, for writing we use Writing Strands. I hate the program... but it seems to be working with my DS. It's the first program that has worked. So we're sticking to it.
As far as handwriting try Handwriting Without Tears. I swear by it. Last year my son's writing resembled alphabet soup. It was all over the place and his spacing was horrible. This year... his handwriting is better than mine. He has mild cp (really horrible fine motor skills)... so this is a miracle.

I have heard of some work being done in Canada that looks promising. Two books that might be of interest: "Creative Mathematics" and "Can I Play You My Song". They are both by Rena Upitis. "Creative Mathematics" is about integrating math with music and visual arts.

The music and visual arts are used to help students better understand the math. "Can I Play You My Song" is about teaching children how to notate music. Learning how to write music is about pattern recognition. Music, like english, is just a language. It is made up of letters, words, sentences, phrases, etc. They are just called by different names.

This is Rena Upitis' website at Queens University in Kingston, Ontario, CANADA: educ.queensu.ca/~upitisr/.

There is another good book called "How People Learn" by the National Research Council: www.nap.edu/html/howpeople1/. The entire book is online for free.

There is an article, "Left blind-spot 'gives ADHD clue'"
www.adders.org/news103.htm, that offers some interesting insight into ADHD.

Hope that this is of some use to you...

Hey, Thanks Daveed. We haven't found a math or language arts program yet... writing music hadn't even occurred to me although it makes sense.

It all goes back to the classic Greek education model. Tie each core subject with a corresponding art form. It makes the core subject more real to life when children can see it in practice, rather than just theory. I hate theory for theory sake, at least when teaching kids, especially those who already have some learning difficulties.

When I was younger, they use to call ADHD minimal brain disfunction. Catchy name, huh? That is a great label for a child, but I did turn out too bad. Drumming, for me, was my life saver. I have a couple of teachers who took me under their wing and opened my mind up to the possibilites of music. That focus helped me a great deal. And let's not forget that I was also a Ritilin kid from way back, late 60's when they had absolutely no idea what high dosages would do.

If I can be of any other assistance, please just let me know.

Yeah, I've heard that name before--my son's brain is anything but minimal! I really don't even like the tag ADD as it implies he's deficient (when he can very intensely focus for long periods on some things) and has a 'disorder' as in disease. I tell my kids is not a disease or a lacking in anything; rather it's just a different way of handling or processing information. He seems to like that definition better and it helps his brother have more patience (sometimes!)

We bought a used piano a few months ago and he seems interested in that. I can teach him some basics there. I also got him a practice pad, drum sticks, and a beginners teach yourself type book last year but the sticks became some kind of shooting space hero gun and ended up lost. He also didn't have much patience for learning how to hold them correctly and only drum on the pad, not the table or stair railings... :) Think I'll try again with a different approach.

The right brain/left brain book talked about ADD kids seeing the big picture and working their way backwards whereas left brained folks start at step 1 to reach the big picture; and also makes a big point of right brainers being highly visual. Seems to go with brining in corresponding art forms...

Thanks for your input and offer of help. I hope to have time tomorrow to explore the web sites mentioned earlier.

If I may make a suggestion. Check out www.dci.org. I am a drum corps kid from way back when. If there is some way for you to show him some of the video records, it will amaze him and you. It was a turning point for me.

If you have dificulty downloading some of the vid clips, I'd be happy to burn you a CD of some of the most amazing pagentry that I have ever seen.
