Some people homeschool so they can do their own thing, others want the support of an organization of homeschoolers. I've done it both ways. When I started out I belonged to a homeschool group so organized we called ourselves an academy and wore uniforms to required field trips! That was back in the early 1980s. Later I was completely independent and it was less stressful.

Re: Are you part of a homeschool network?
Wed, January 7, 2004 - 12:20 PMWe are... but not the same as the one you belonged to. What you're describing sounds more like an umbrella school than a support group.
We belong to the Tri-State Homeschool Network, which is based in Delaware. They offer activities, some classes (like music classes), and meetings to share info and ideas. They're affiliated with an umbrella-type co-op school, but it operates as a separate entity.
I'm considering joining a new umbrella program later this year, or for next year because I understand that it's very unschool-friendly and my oldest seems to learn best in a more hands-on type approach. It has one review per year. Our current situation requires at least 2, possibly 3 portfolio reviews per year.
