getting started

I have 2 children. One is a year old and the other is 9. The 9 year old is currently living with a different parent and going to public school. She really would like to be home schooled and if she did come to live here I would be able to provide that for her because I stay at home with the baby and used to own a preschool. I have never taught older children and I am wondering what you would have to do to get started. Do I need to register with the state or something. Can she take classes off the internet? Any help would be appriciated.

I am currently enrolled in homeschooling for the first time. My children are in 5th and 6th grades. This is the school we use...

    www.caliva.org/

This says California, but I know they talked about having curriculums in other states. It is a public school, so costs nothing (in approved counties-- if you are not in an approved county you can still get the curriculum for $1200, pennies compared to the cost of private school). They us the K12 curriculum, if you are familiar ( www.k12.com/ ). In fact, it may be through the K12 website that you find info for your area.

It has been hard adjusting to homeschooling, but we are enjoying it! While this school does work out of books, a good portion of it is also an online school, with interactive "games", lessons, and assessments. We also have an actual teacher with whom we check in regularly, who makes sure we are accomplishing what we are supposed to be, is ready to help if we ever get "stuck", organizes field trips, and on, and on, and on.

In fact, my daughter is waiting to take an assessment now, so I gotta go, but will be on later if you have any other questions.

would love to answer this question in forum with you, ora, where others can share, yet i might need you to remind me by a private message so i return to it not in the middle of the night. i began my homeschooling journey at age 9, it went really well, my mom and i worked together to create our own curriculum and to create space for areas of the freedom of unschooling (including both adding to and throwing out parts of our curriculum plan as we saw fit in the moment) and keeping records of it all. i've also worked with some older kids in my adult life and have a bunch to share. so, if you're still interested let me know and i'll write some thoughts and ideas for you and your dear one.
      love and light

    I'm in Vancouver, BC, Canada.
We have alot of what's called Distance Education avaialable here. I am "enrolled" in a school that provides portfolios and materials for FREE! They have classes that we can go to in real brick and moratr buildings IF we chose...they even offer horseback riding and band!
I like being part of a program because they chart our progress and it keeps me very motivated because I know I have a portfolio to maintain.
You may look into something like that in your area; we can use any cirriculum we choose as long as we submit only 3 samples on each subject. You are free to follow what course you chose.
We are allowed $1000 to buy supplies and books and lessons. They even pay for our internet connection!

I have an 11 yr old son who has been home for 3 years and when I gave him the choice, he chose to remain homeschooled.
I have 4 kids of my own and I do daycare for 2 more, so even though I'm busy, the time we share as a family is incredible.
I'm now enrolling my twin girls in the Grade One program so I'll have 3 kids "home schooling". The littlest one is 4 so I will be basically doing pre-kindergarten with him.

I love it, and I would never go back to "regular" school; Our family has grown closer and wiser. I love being involved and your kids respond better than you think!!!!

PS: On sunny days we go OUTSIDE to do "home work"!

Also check out selfdesign.org for a homelearning online community that is amazing!!!

I also recommend the book by the same title, "SelfDesign." It's available through the website.

I want to reassure you that you have everything in you to learn along with your child. The most important thing is to be present and communicate with eachother your wants and needs. If you approach homeschooling as two learners learning together, one with some more experience than the other, it relieves you of the pressure of having to "teach" anything.

I trust you will find deep joy and fulfillment in giving this most awesome gift to your child and to you.

        Blessings.
