Hi folks, I just joined this tribe.

Although I also hope to home-school my own kids (once they exist...), I was actually looking for other people who were home schooled.

If you want to ask me any questions about what it's like to be on the kid's end of home schooling, feel free. I went to kindergarten briefly, and then never attended school again until I started community college.

I think maybe I'll start a new tribe for home schoolees...

Hi there! Welcome to the group :) I did go through all 12 hellish years! I do get a lot of encouragement from an unschooling list I am on. Please visit the Unschooling-List user.mc.net/~kwentz/ULfaq.html - This is a very busy list and is for unschoolers, or parents wanting more info on how to go less structured.

Anyway back to my point. lol On the UL we have several parents who were homeschooled, and quite a few have grown children with families of their own, who are also homeschooling them.

Sorry this got long. :) MAKE a great day! Cathi

I thought I was the only person who called kids "chittlins"!

I went to school, and was bored to tears for pretty much 10 years. School back then didn't do any better than they do now for dealing with gifted or ADD kids, and I was both. My younger sister had dyslexia and things were not much better for her.

My chittlins will probably be ADD kids, and I don't think regular school is the place for such children. I was shocked to hear most schools don't even have PE anymore. I would have imploded without PE; kids need a break in a long day they are expected to sit still. Anyway...

There is no reason homeschooled kids would only study things they want to, unless their parents were too hands-off. I plan to have my kids study everything they would in regular school, only we'll go further and study the classics in literature, some more sciences, etc. I think it ws a huge mistake to move away from the classical education that used to be taught, but anyone who knows the history of compulsory education in America knows it was never meant to foster independence of thought and individualism....

I went to numerous schools until I was 7, when I was homeschooled for a few years, then went back to the itinerant schooling, then back to homeschooling for four more years when I was 13.

My parents were neither attempting to recreate school at home, nor idealistic unschoolers... they generally gave me a limited number of basic tasks to work on, and left me to my own devices for additional study. In my later teens, they left me mostly to my own devices for curriculum and materials (because I had demonstrated that I wanted to go to college).

Before I was about 15, I thought homeschooling was better than school... but around that age I was starting to think about how I was going to go to college, and I happened to visit an alternative high school in Mendocino, California. There, I started to realize that there were many things being traded off for my self-determination... and even a conventional school could offer more resources for learning than my homeschooling did.

At this point (25 years later) I have a very low opinion of unschooling... in the best case, it encourages kids to pursue only what they already "like"... and in the worst case, leaves kids unprepared to function in the world on their own.

I think an ideal education involves an educator who leads by example, and poses questions that illuminate why less attractive areas of study will be good to study anyway. A real education has to be formed in the tension between real teachers and real students... be they in a classroom, or at home.

I did go to school, unfortunately, but have spent most of my adult life schooling myself. I will suggest to my kids that they join this tribe, they can tell you more about their personal experiences than I can. I helped them to learn to read and write and some math basics after which they were very unschooled and function very well in the real world on their own. When Jillian started Art Center she had to take a placement test and spent the summer studying for that, she scored so high they told her she could skip English so I don't think unschooling hurt her. I like to think that my husband and I don't lead a boring life, we do lots of things, read, watch good movies, make movies, dance, make music and art, are politically active, pay bills etc so we just included our children in our daily lives and though they didn't have formal educations they picked up things along the way. Maybe that is what you are calling an educator that leads by example only we were the parents.

        Elizabeth,
How old are your children? I have a 10yr boy and a 12yr old girl. I wanted to tell you Thank you! Your post brightened my evening.
I enjoy all the things we are doing as a family. I would not trade this time for anything in the world.
        MAKE a great day! Cathi

hey jeff.. i went to that school in mendocino county! the mendocino community school won the golden bell for alternative schools in california once upon a time, and i was fortunate enough to get into it when it was really awesome...it's changed a lot, but you can still get an independent study education. it is unclear in your post if you are saying that the community school was a conventional school? confusing....

i loved the community school because it offerd not only good classes, as well as independent study programs, but we had stuff there that you didn't get in most standard high schools, like a recording studio where students got to do whatever the hell they wanted with music, a reALLY WONDERFUL HORTICULTURE PROGRAM, ETC.

i took classes there that oi would have hated in a regular school, but the teachers were so wonderful it makes me interested in the subjects to this day, ie. molecular biology; ryan snow was and i think still is the science teacher, a great man who taught at stanford 13 years until he got busted for something naughty...and decided to teach at mendo community school, fortunately for us.

I, did indeed, go to School - and hated it after third grade. I LOVED college, but everything else was torture. I hope to homeschool my daughter, both un-schooling and other methods.

Unfortunitly I went through public school. Drpped out after the tenth grade too. Then I went to join the navy, but they won't except drop outs. So I took this long and drawn out test that was supposed to prove that I needed to go back to school, after the test I was questioned on how I was able to cheat. after a while, I was presented a diploma by the state of Pa. I graduated in the top 3% of the state, but never finished school. The point is, that throughout my childhood, teachers always thought I had a learning disability, when in fact I have a photographic memory. The point is, my oldest kid, my boy, is autistic, and the public school he was in wanted to hold him back his first year. I said therer was no way in hell they where going to do that, so we pulled him. Any way, he is about to be ten in a few months, and is floating in the 9th grade math area, and in post high school astronomy. These things would not be tought to him if he where in public school, and his three sisters all want to beat him, they do as much as they can, and I do not do anything to force upon them, it is a game to them, and games are fun. If I was to send them back to school, they would be outcasts. Here at home, we can do anything, go anywhere, and not have to worry if the teacher with 36 kids will actually try to teach them....

Eric, I would love to read about your experience, what you liked and did not like about it, and the method/s your parents used. Thanks for offering.

I went to private alternative (hippy) schools in San Francisco. I had the best education that I could possibly hope for. We went on midnight field trips, studied about all sorts of cultures and religions, participated in many different arts, and we went camping a lot. There were many diverse people who would teach at and attend the schools. From one of J. Paul Getty's grandsons to a girl who was 3/4 blind.
One of these schools still exists, and has expanded from k-6 to k-8th grade. I would send my children there, but it is in San Francisco and we are in Novato, now. So, my husband and I decided that homeschooling will be best for our two kids (Owen is three, and Alice will be born sometime in April). I am a work-at-home mom, so I think that this will work out well for all! I just could NOT imagine my children being subjected to the California Public school system! EVER!!! My Owen shows so many signs of high intelligence, and has this amazing and inquisitive independant spirit, I don't want that to be squashed by The System.
      Mini-rant over.

      Love and smootchies to all!

I went to school - small rural school that bored me to tears until I was 16. I then when to a public art school - think FAME - at 16 for my last two years. It was perfect and total torture at the same time, long story.
Anyway, my boredom in school did sensitize me to my children’s need academically, but it was their desire for a different daily learning experience that made the decision. They are happier, it isn’t the easiest thing in the world and yet it is clearly worth the effort. They are learning more and they do not have negative feelings about learning that they were certainly developing trying to fit into the system.

    >Did YOU go to school?

Yes, I attended public school for elementary, high school, and college (my wife did as well). Be happy to talk/write about the experiences therein if anyone desires.

    >Hi folks, I just joined this tribe.

Me, too ;) Only you joined in 2004 and I'm joining in 2006...hmmm

    >Although I also hope to home-school my own kids (once they exist...), I was actually looking for >other people who were home schooled.

    Did you find many?

    >If you want to ask me any questions about what it's like to be on the kid's end of home >schooling, feel free. I went to kindergarten briefly, and then never attended school again until I >started community college.

What would you change about your homeschool experience if you could?

    >I think maybe I'll start a new tribe for home schoolees..

Did you do this? I know some teenagers that have recently finished thier homeschooling and might like to join you.

As a quick intro: My wife and I have been homeschooling our children since infancy... They are now 12 and 9. We currently roadschool as we travel full time and we maintain our residence in Missouri for several reasons one of which is that the homeschooling laws there are quite favorable to us. We are currently physically in northwest Arizona, learning many things including desert ecology...Soon we will be heading north and west up through the Sequoias to the Redwoods and on up to Seattle....
